Metro is inviting proposals for cultural and archaeological services for Block 14 of Lone Fir Cemetery, the

site of the future cultural heritage and healing garden. Lone Fir Cemetery is listed on the National Register

of Historic Places for its association with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad

patterns of our history (Criteria A).

From 1891 to 1928, more than 1,131 people of Chinese ancestry were buried at Block 14. Even earlier, it is

believed that 183 patients of the Oregon Hospital for the Insane, the state’s first psychiatric hospital, were

laid to rest in various areas of Lone Fir Cemetery.

Thanks to the parks and nature bond measure approved by voters of the region in 2019, Metro is refining

the design concept for the site and constructing a memorial in honor of those buried there. Design and

construction is anticipated to take approximately four years.

The original conceptual design for the memorial was completed in 2009, along with an accompanying
